A proper and decent burial is a service every human being should be afforded, regardless of station in life, circumstances of death, belief or unbelief. The Episcopal Church provides liturgies for those professing the Christian faith and those who do not. It is the policy of the Rector of St. James Episcopal Church that this parish church and its ordained ministers will be available to all in need of this ministry of the church.
"The death of a member of the Church should be reported as soon as possible to, and arrangements for the funeral should be made in consultation with, the Minister of the Congregation." Book of Common Prayer, page 490
"Baptized Christians are properly buried from the Church. The service should be held at a time when the congregation has the opportunity to be present." Book of Common Prayer, page 490
At St. James Episcopal Church, we know that death can be a complicated and difficult time for families. We are here to support you through this transition, and to help your family celebrate the life of your loved one.
As stated in the Book of Common Prayer, page 462, "When a person is near death, the Minister of the Congregation should be notified, in order that the ministrations of the Church may be provided."
We ask that you call the church so that we can support and be present with you at your time of loss when there is a death in your family or a family member is near death.
We encourage completing a Funeral Planning Form and filing a copy with the church for your final church services and plans at St. James. Many of us shrink at the thought of this kind of planning but a well-planned ceremony and formalities help to align with the deceased's and family's wishes while adhering to the church's liturgical practices. This form streamlines communication between the family and church, guiding the selection of music, hymns, readings, prayers, and burial arrangement. It help avoid last-minute decisions, ensuring every detail is thoughtfully considered. The form also provides a structured approach to planning, reducing stress for the grieving family. By capturing preferences and important information in advance, the service can be a respectful, organized, and meaningful celebration of the individual's life and faith. It can be one's final proclamation of the Gospel and a message of hope and reassurance to loved ones.
Upon completing this form, you may drop it off at the St. James office, email to communication@stjamesmarietta.com, or mail it to:
