Outreach and Missions

"To encourage its members to be both  mindful of and responsive to the needs of others, to respect the dignity of every human being, and to work actively sharing the love of Christ.”  - Outreach Mission Statement

Outreach and Missions goes beyond our church doors to minister to others in our community, our diocese, and the world. In addition to the groups listed below we support the Holy Comforter,  Emmaus House, the Episcopal Relief and  Development, Family Promise of Cobb County and The Extension. We endeavor to embody the love of  Christ and foster healing, reconciliation, and transformation in a world marked by brokenness and division. Check out all the ways you can get involved.

Knitting for Charity

Knitting is part of a long and quiet tradition that’s both plainly practical and deeply spiritual. With needles clicking, they weave together not just garments to warm the body but also comfort and companionship to nurture the soul. Taken from Knitting Into The Mystery, Jorgensen and Izard.

All are welcome - those who already knit or crochet and those who would like to learn to knit. We make scarves and hats for Christmas at Sea (a program of the Seamen's Church Institute), baby blankets for infants with severe health issues, baby hats for premature infants at Grady Hats and small Christmas stockings for Wonderful Days students.

Local Food

Engaging in local food assistance and addressing hunger and food insecurity within our neighborhood is a meaningful way for each of us to live out our Baptismal Covenant. It is a tangible way to assist individuals and families struggling to meet basic needs.

There are multiple ways to be involved:

  • St. James Food Assistance Program - We collect non-perishable food items and toiletries for MUST Ministries and the Center for Family Resources (CFR). Donations can be placed in the shopping cart located in the foyer all year long. Volunters are needed to deliver the food we collect to these organizations.
  • Thanks for Giving Program - At Thanksgiving, we support the Center for Family Resources (CFR), Thanks for Giving Program by providing food items for Thanksgiving meals. This program helps Cobb County families build lasting memories and create traditions by ensuring they can share a meal together, even during financially stressful times.
  • The Pantry on Church - Volunteer opportunities are available to help our next-door neighbor, First Presbyterian Church. The Pantry on Church, in partnership with Sweetwater Mission in Austell, distributes food to the community every Tuesday. Volunteers are needed to help with their efforts. For more information, visit The Pantry on Church or fill out the contact form below.
  • The Family Cupboard - The Center for Family Resources (CFR) operates The Family Cupboard Choice Pantry, providing food items and necessities such as diapers, formula, and basic hygiene items. This non-traditional pantry is designed to empower families with a personal shopping experience while continuing to emphasize the importance of making healthy and nutritious food choices and getting the most out of their shopping budgets. CFR offers monthly training sessions for volunteers at their food pantry. Volunteers need to attend only one session to get involved. They are located at 400 Franklin Gateway, Suite 250, Marietta, GA 30067.

Creation Care/Recycling

Our church's recycling program promotes environmental stewardship by encouraging congregation members to recycle paper, plastics, and electronics. Collection bins are conveniently located on-site. Together, we reduce waste, conserve resources, and inspire sustainable practices within our community. Join us in making a difference!

Reach Out Mental Health (ROMH)

Reach Out Mental Health provides a monthly enrichment opportunity for mentally disabled adults in our community. Our loyal and dedicated group of 17+ volunteers work to serve lunch to approximately 80-100 guests each month. Following lunch, a spirited game of Bingo is enjoyed by all where each guest goes home a winner.

Support Our Troops

This ministry sends goodie boxes to many individuals who serve our country. These individuals share the boxes with all the troops in their camp. Currently, we send eight per month. Donations for postage are happily accepted by making the check to St. James and marked 'Troop  Support.'

The Extension

The Barbara Crafton Center for Women at The Extension is a residential rehabilitation facility for women seeking recovery from substance abuse. The Extension, which also has a facility for men,  was founded by a group of local physicians who recognized the need for these services in our community.

Volunteers provide most of the food for the monthly Sunday Night meal visits with additional funding from interested parishioners and the Outreach Committee of St. James.

Wonderful Day's Preschool

Wonderful Days Preschool, Inc. (WDP) is a Georgia non-profit 501(c)(3) preschool program for low-income families that meet Federal Income Eligibility Guidelines in the Cobb County area. It is a private, tuition-free preschool that serves two meals a day and provides free transportation. WDP is partially funded and housed by St. James Episcopal Church and its parishioners as part of their loving community outreach.

WDP's program objective is to provide an outstanding experience that prepares children with the early educational skills they need to succeed in kindergarten and beyond in our public school system. We use Scholastic's "Big Day for Pre-K", a bilingual, literacy-based curriculum, which includes daily lessons on vocabulary, language, math, emergent reading, and emergent writing skills. The curriculum is designed to prepare our students to speak and understand English in  Kindergarten. The student ratio is 8:1 in our pre-Kindergarten/4's classes.
